The Hard Parts Count, Too

June 9, 2025

No one talks enough about how hard it can be.

The barn days that leave you feeling more frustrated than fulfilled.

The rides that fall apart.

The setbacks no one sees but you.

The quiet question in your head that asks, “Am I good enough for this?”

Every horse person has been there. And if they say they haven’t, they’re either brand new or not being honest.

We don’t always post those moments. They’re not the ones you throw up on Instagram. There’s no filter for doubt, or tears, or the feeling of being stuck at the same place no matter how hard you try.

But those moments matter.

They are part of the ride, just as much as the sunsets and ribbons and smooth distances.

The Sweat and the Tears

There’s a kind of grind in this life that people don’t see from the outside.

They see the trail rides, the show days, the golden light through the arena dust. But they don’t see the hours behind it. The aching arms after working through a stubborn session. The sweat dripping down your back under a summer sun, your horse testing every boundary known to you. The mornings you get up before the world, and the nights you get home sore, dirty, and unsure if any of it is working.

They don’t see the tears you wipe away in the quiet corner of your horse’s stall—when your horse just won’t settle, or when the vet gives you news you didn’t want to hear, or when you feel like you’re giving everything and it still isn’t enough.

This isn’t a hobby you dip your toe into. It’s a full-body, full-heart commitment. And it will break you open more than once.

But the beautiful part?

That sweat, those tears, the constant showing up—it all builds something. Quietly. Slowly. Day after gritty day.

It teaches you resilience. It teaches you humility. It reminds you what it means to care for something outside of yourself, even when it’s inconvenient. Even when it hurts. Even when no one’s watching.

Sometimes the biggest wins are invisible.

Getting back on after a rough fall.

Showing up when you’d rather quit.

Choosing to stay kind—especially to yourself—when things aren’t going right.

Progress isn’t always linear. Some days, it doesn’t even feel like a straight line at all. It feels like spiraling back to the same lesson again and again, until one day, something clicks. Quietly. Like a door finally unlocking.

You’ll never forget that moment—but you only get there because of the hard ones.

So if you’re in the thick of it right now: you’re not alone. Keep showing up. Keep listening. Keep trying. You don’t need to have it all figured out.

Your horse doesn’t need perfect.

He needs present.

And so do you.

The challenges? They’re part of the story.

And they count just as much as the wins.
